Laura Kosann To Adapt ‘Butcher & Blackbird’ For Director Chris McKay, Lyrical Media And Ryder Picture Company

Laura Kosann has come on to write the Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company’s film adaptation of Brynne Weaver’s bestselling novel Butcher & Blackbird, the first installment of Weaver’s New York Times bestselling Ruinous Love trilogy. Chris McKay is set to direct.

Lyrical’s Alexander Black and RPC’s Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce the film, with RPC’s Emma Rappold serving as co-producer. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce alongside Weaver.

The story follows two competing killers who target other serial killers as they attempt to one-up each other. As their unlikely bond grows into something deeper, they start to wonder if a future together could ever be possible.

Weaver’s genre-breaking novel quickly rose to prominence after its release in October 2023, becoming a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller and going viral on BookTok. Weaver recently signed a seven-figure deal for her upcoming dark rom-com trilogy. Her books have been sold in almost 20 countries with more than 1 million copies sold to date.

Kosann is currently writing an Untitled Trilogy Project for Netflix based on an R.L. Stine property. Chernin is attached to produce. Previously, she adapted Hi, Mom for Sony and Escape Artists as well as the graphic novel Mercy Sparx for MGM and The Picture Company.

Additionally, Kosann recently rewrote a live-action Christmas musical entitled Santa is Real for Amazon. Stephen Chbosky is attached to direct.
